Efterklang released their 4AD debut Magic Chairs in February. The band’s third album in total, Magic Chairs was recorded between studios in Aarhus and Copenhagen in Denmark, and featured a number of guest musicians, including touring band members Peter and Heather W. Broderick, Frederik Teige and Daniel James. The result was an intimate record in which the grandiose classical structures heard so prominently on previous albums were replaced by something far more streamlined and altogether melodic. While Magic Chairs still bore the occasional signature moment, it was an album that represented a bold step forward for the band.
On the back of the success of Magic Chairs, Efterklang recorded an incredibly well received 4AD Session, which to date remains the most viewed installment in the series. Filmed in the band's home city of Copenhagen, the session took place in the beautiful surroundings of VEGA and gave most fans a first glance of the band performing new material from Magic Chairs live. View the full session here. The session was then followed by the ambitious Efterkids project, in which the band played two songs with the talented students of New York's Special Music School. Further details of the performance are here.
Moving into 2011, the band remain extremely busy with touring commitments (full listings here), and more excitingly still, have recently announced details of a film with acclaimed director, Vincent Moon which premieres on the band's tour in the new year and teasers of which can be viewed here. Reflecting on the past twelve months and looking ahead to next year, the band had this to say:
“In 2010 we released our Magic Chairs album and then we played a shitload of concerts following that - it's been great! In August we met up with Vincent Moon on a very special Danish island to make a feature-length film and this has kept us busy too. The film is called An Island and it will premiere in February. In February and March 2011 we will play one last European tour and then we plan to pull the plug. We will take a break and when we meet up again, we will start working on our next album.”
Magic Chairs is out now on CD, LP and download
