'Beth/Rest' is the fourth single from Bon Iver's Grammy-winning 2011 release, Bon Iver, Bon Iver. Filmed in the woods surrounding Bon Iver's studio, April Base, the video for 'Beth/Rest' is based on a treatment written by Justin Vernon that described people made of light living in a dream-like world that encapsulates their being. Justin said, "It's kind of about two people who are truly meant for each other and what happens to their essence. How they connect is some other thing that we don't know how to really talk about."
'Beth/Rest' was directed by Dan Huiting and Justin Vernon and stars long-time Bon Iver member Mike Noyce. Picture Machine Productions' Andre Durand served as Director of Photography and Daniel Cummings as producer. Beth/Rest was edited by Kevin Russell.
'Beth/Rest' will be released as a 12" single on 12th November, backed with a live version of the track recorded at the Rare Book Room in New York.
In his essay on 'Beth/Rest' for the Believer's July/August 2012 issue, Martin Seay wrote a thoughtful, in-depth exploration of the "soaring, stately, unapologetically anthemic power ballad.":
"What Vernon seems to have set out to do - throughout Bon Iver's catalog to date, and in 'Beth/Rest' in particular - is make listeners' sentimentality available to them in a way that is at once heartfelt and self-conscious. He does so by presenting the song's sentimentality in brackets that function similarly to, while differing strongly from, the ironic quotation marks that decorate much of indie rock."
