Recorded mostly as a duo of Fraser and Guthrie, the album introduces a variety of different shadings and approaches to the incipient Cocteaus sound, pointing the band towards the exultant, elegant beauty of later releases.
Confusingly sharing the same title as the full album, the debut mini-album has been expanded for CD release with the 12" extended versions of four non-album singles.
Bearing much more resembalance to the similiaity gripping, dark early work of bands like Cocteau Twins and The Cure than to the later fusions of music that would come too characterize the duo's sound, the debut is a striking, dour landmark in early-80's atmospherics.
Originally credited to The Boys Next Door, the forerunner of The Birthday Party that had been part of the Australian punk scene from as early as 1973. Their debut recordings stand as some of the most significant noise explorations of the era.
